I’m about to turn 40. If you’d told 20-year-old me that I’d only just be getting Pedestal – my debut novel – published, I would have looked at you with dismay and disdain, that way that only a petulant 20-year-old can.

I woke up this morning with a dream lingering in my mind.

I used to be a big doodler. As far back as I can remember, I would scribble, sketch and draw at every available opportunity.

I’m not very mature.

A bit deep, but not mature.

‘Just let it go’.

That’s a pretty common expression we hear all the time, right? Usually said in that casual way, as though ‘letting go’ were the easiest thing in the world to do.

I don’t always write for other people. In fact, most of what I write never gets seen by anyone’s eyes other than my own. Creativity needn’t always be for display. It can often be deeply personal.
